The global market for mobile phones will turn around in the fourth quarter, a business research company has forecast, with Christmas sales leading the recovery.
Strategy Analytics’ report into the sector predicts that worldwide shipments of mobiles will rise by three per cent to 300 million in the period between October and November this year.
The upbeat projection comes after the sector has suffered declines in successive quarters, with sales of mid-range handsets particularly hard-hit.
Conditions in the UK are expected to be boosted imminently by the launch of the iPhone 3G S on Orange, which is believed to be scheduled for November 10th.
Currently, the handset is exclusive to O2 in the UK. However, the arrival of Apple mobiles on a competitor network is widely expected to fuel a price war.
An indication of underlying demand from Orange customers was provided by the fact that 200,000 people have registered for email updates about the handset.
