HTC One M8: Five things you need to know

The worst kept secret in smartphones is out. HTC yesterday finally revealed its One (M8) to the world, after weeks and weeks of rumours, leaks and speculation.

The good news is that this is a handset that was well worth the wait.

It looks the business and comes laden with the kind of top–end features that’d make Apple and Samsung blush.

Want the inside line on this all–new smartie? Then read on and we’ll tell you everything you need to know.

1 It’s got a dual lens camera

The HTC One (M8)’s new ‘Duo Camera’ has been an open secret for ages. But that doesn’t make it any less impressive.

The concept is simple. That second lens, which sits at the top of the device, is designed to give added focus and clarity to images.

Importantly, it lets you switch the focus of your snaps after you’ve taken them, a feature already key on Nokia Lumia phones.

The main camera still uses the same 4.1 megapixel Ultra Pixel tech found on 2013’s original HTC One.

2 Its BoomSound speaker has been boosted

BoomSound was the HTC One feature beloved by bus–troubling scallies who loved cranking out their tunes in public spaces.

Fortunately for them, the speakers have been given a major boost and are now 25% louder than the originals.

They’re no longer branded as being made by Beats Audio though, losing some street cred in the process.

Seriously, though, such impressive speakers means you won’t need to hook up a Bluetooth blaster when you want to play tunes in the garden or a room where you can’t hear your stereo.

3 Storage is down, but SD support is go

HTC has slashed internal storage on the One (M8) down to 16GB from 32GB compared to its predecessor.

That might seem like a bum deal, but on the upside it has managed to squeeze in microSD support.

The upshot is that you can add an extra 128GB of space. That's more than enough for stashing hefty game downloads and videos and especially good if you want to transfer content from one device to another without any hassle.

4 It’s got a super-smart case

HTC’s new Dot View case is an absolute winner. As well as protecting its precious cargo, it allows you to use your phone without having to whip the front of the cover off.

Tap it and it’ll show any new notifications, as well as showing the weather and time.

You can even use the camera by pressing the device’s volume key and take calls too.

In all, it’s a cut above any other case going.

5 It’s up for grabs now

Unlike Samsung, which is still keeping us waiting for a taste of its Galaxy S5, HTC has released its One (M8) immediately.

You can snag it now on Three, Vodafone and EE, with each offering neat extras to entice you to stump up.

Vodafone is handing out a free Boombass speaker to the first 3,000 to sign up, EE is doubling its allowance for those who pay £37.99 a month, while Three is serving up all–you–can–eat data and minutes for those paying £44 every four weeks.
