Amazon smartphone set for 18 June launch

Amazon looks set to reveal its first-ever smartphone, after it disclosed details of a special launch event being held on June 18th.

On an invitation request page Amazon gave little away, other than a form for punters to solicit an 'in' to the gathering in Seattle and, more exciting, a teaser video about what would be on show.

While the footage doesn’t show the device, it details users’ reactions to a piece of kit offscreen. One woman says ‘it moved with me’, chiming with suggestions that the Amazon smartphone will use special face–tracking software courtesy of five front–facing cameras.

A still of the video, posted on Google+, has shown the briefest of glimpses of the phone on screen.

While specs haven’t been revealed, a recent leak suggested the device would come with 2GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and likely use a tweaked version of Google Android, similar to the company’s Kindle Fire tablet.

The 3D tracking element is said to allow users to see around products and pictures on the screen.

This will be a boon for those shopping on Amazon and wanting a closer look at the stuff they’re about to part with their hard earned cash for.
