Apple CEO Tim Cook has dismissed concerns about sluggish iPad sales, telling seasoned tech journalist Walt Mossberg that the recent decline in sales is nothing more than a ‘speed bump’.
In an interview for Mossberg’s Re/code site, Cook said: “We couldn't be happier with how we've done with the first four years of the iPad...I'd call what's going on recently a 'speed bump', and I've seen that in every category."
The previous two quarters have seen iPad sales slide. In its most recent financial figures, covering April to July, Apple sold 13.3 million tablets compared to 14.6 million in the same timeframe last year.
Between January and March this year the number fell from 19.5 million to 16.35 million.
The numbers are by no means bad compared with rival tablet-makers. But it seems clear that users are unwilling to update tablets with the same regularity as smartphones.
Apple is apparently looking to counter this trend with the release of a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, due for release next year. Rumours about the slate have resurfaced today after it was reportedly shelved back in March.
