Here Maps, the one–time Nokia–owned mapping system which formed the core of Microsoft’s smartphone satellite navigation system, will no longer work on Windows 10 smartphones, it has been confirmed.
That means that customers who buy the latest Lumia devices from Microsoft will not be able to use the service, which for a long time was billed as the best alternative to offerings from Google and Apple.
Here says it has no choice but to end its Windows 10 association, on the grounds that it would have to completely rebuild its app in order to work with the platform. Currently it uses a workaround to bring its app to Windows 10, one which is due to stop being effective in June.
Older Windows Phone 8-powered devices will still have Here support.
Here was bought by a group of German car manufacturers last year, and elements of its mapping tool form part of the native Windows maps app.
This move is yet another blow for Microsoft. The company has seen major names such as Pinterest pull out of Windows 10, with the platform still lagging well behind Android and iOS.
