Apple Watch 2 set to launch in September

The Apple Watch 2 looks set to launch in September, after reports surfaced that the long–awaited follow–up to Apple’s first smartwatch would be released alongside the iPhone 7.

Supply-chain sources in Taiwan claim Apple has ramped up orders for components that make the Apple Watch 2 tick. What’s more, it's reputed the tech giant plans to ship as many as two million watches a month.

That represents a huge increase from the original Apple Watch. Apple has never officially released sales figures, but analysts believe it sold no more than 7.5 million in its first year on sale.

The timing of the new smartwatch would make sense for Apple.

As well as revealing its new iOS 10 software for iPhones and iPads earlier this week, it also unveiled its new watchOS 3.

This software makes the Apple Watch faster to use and means the device is no longer so reliant on being pairedm with an iPhone.

With the much rumoured iPhone 7 expected to be a minor boost to last year’s iPhone 6s, a cheaper, new–look Apple Watch 2 could give Apple a fillip and deflect criticism from the fact that its flagship smartphone is not expected to receive a major redesign until late 2017.
