Nintendo’s standard-bearer Mario is coming to the iPhone, it has been confirmed, marking the next phase in the games-maker’s long-overdue embrace of mobile gaming.
Super Mario Run, which was announced at the iPhone 7 launch event by Nintendo figurehead Shigeru Miyamoto, is an endless runner along the lines of Temple Runner but with the look and feel of classic 2D Mario game.
The game can be controlled one-handed. Tap the screen lightly and Mario performs a short jump. Tap it for longer and you’ll get a longer jump.
There’s no specific due date yet. But we were promised it’s coming soon.
News of Nintendo’s plans come after the short-lived phenom that was Pokemon Go, in which the company holds a significant stake.
