Motorola lifted the lid on fresh takes on its Moto G handsets today, teaming keen price points with a premium metal construction, the latest version of Android and fingerprint scanners.

Dubbed the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus and unveiled at Mobile World Congress, the handsets feature 5-inch and 5.2-inch Full HD displays and will be up for grabs for €199 and €229 respectively.

Both phones feature removable batteries, as well as biometric security in the form of a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button.

So far, so familiar. But the twist this time is that the scanner recognises left and right finger swipes, as well as the standard swipe downwards to unlock the phone, and so functions more like a touchpad.

This means you go back a screen by swiping left, without the need for a dedicated back button.

Sinewy octa-core Snapdragon processors are common to both iterations too, as is Android 7.0 (Nougat).

The Moto G is equipped with a 13-megapixel main camera, a five-megapixel front camera and a 2,800 mAh battery. And it’s got a microSD card slot too, with scope to expand storage by up to 128GB.

The Moto G Plus features 64GB of storage, a 12-megapixel camera with what Motorola describes as ‘dual autofocus pixels’ that mean you can focus faster.

It also has a five-megapixel front camera for selfies. The battery comes in at 3000 mAh and there’s expandable storage of up to 128GB via microSD.

As with most Motorola phones, the handsets featured a stripped-down, fuss-free version of Android, without customisations.

Expect the handsets to go on sale in March, with monthly contract prices likely to start at £25 per month.

The launch event was also marked by the announcement of a series of modules for the Moto Z, dubbed Moto Mods. These include two battery packs, a control pad for gaming with speakers, storage and pre-loaded games and Amazon Alexa Mod with interactive display on the back.
