iPhones are going on sale on Orange before the end of the year, breaking O2’s long-standing UK exclusivity deal for Apple’s all-conquering handsets.

According to a statement from the mobile phone network, Orange customers will be able to buy iPhones on Orange contracts “later this year”.

The company failed to give an indication of a launch date or price points, although it is predicted that the handsets will be available before Christmas to enable Orange to capitalise on the seasonal market.

The news comes after months of speculation that Apple would allow its mobiles to be sold on a range of networks in the UK, with T-Mobile and Vodafone also known to be interested in carrying the phones.

However, contrary to rumours that O2 would retain the rights to the latest edition of the phone and that rivals would be allowed to sell only the older versions, the Orange deal is for both the iPhone 3G S and the iPhone 3G.
