Apple will phase out the iPhone 3GS when the iPhone 5 lands, it has been claimed, calling time on what's been a very impressive innings for the third-generation Apple smartie.

Earlier this year, Apple surprised punters and tech watchers alike when it announced that the latest iOS 6 version of Apple’s software, or at least select features thereof, will be coming to the ageing iPhone 3GS - breathing new life into its dusty chipset.

However, today the handset's invitation to the iOS 6 party looks more and more like a glorious last hurrah, after sources cited by The Telegraph revealed that once the iPhone 5 drops Apple will stop making the 3GS.

According to the unnamed insiders, the phone will be replaced as Apple’s entry-level budget option by the 8GB edition of the iPhone 4.

In turn, we’ll apparently also see the introduction of an 8GB version of the iPhone 4S, also aimed at more cash-conscious consumers.

Invitations sent out to press types earlier this week mean that the iPhone 5 is now almost certain to drop on September 12th, amid all the usual bells and whistles that accompany new iKit launches.

Features on board the phone are expected to include a larger screen, twice the processing grunt and 4G connectivity.
