iPhone 5 Wi-Fi Settings screen

iPhone 5 users are facing a few nagging issues with the Wi-Fi functionality of their handsets, complaints on the official Apple support communities forum suggest.

Despite successfully connecting to a Wi-Fi network and remembering it, many iPhone 5 units are apparently receiving no data through the network, essentially making it impossible to access the internet over a wireless connection.

A thread titled “iPhone 5 wifi issues” on the Apple support forum is filled with such grievances, which, as of writing, has 775 replies and 67,248 views, clearly indicating that it’s a major problem.

The majority of affected users claim resetting the Wi-Fi settings doesn’t solve anything, nor does restoring the handset to its factory settings. Even those with a working Wi-Fi connection say it is slow and drops intermittently. Although some report turning off the LTE toggle helps, but speed remains sluggish.

Customers taking their handsets back to Apple, meanwhile, are reportedly being refused replacements, as it is apparently “not a hardware issue”, though the exact cause of problem has yet to be established and Apple has so far kept mum as to acknowledging its existence.

One solution that appears to be working for some users is to perform the ‘Clear History’ and ‘Clear Cookies and Data’ options under Settings > Safari and restarting the device.

Apple made much of the iPhone 5’s so-called “ultrafast wireless” capabilities at its launch keynote. However, the growing number of complaints don’t bode too well to those claims.

The Cupertino-based giant has been much panned for an embarrassing amount of inaccuracies in its new proprietary Maps application in iOS 6. The iPhone 5 itself has been criticised for being prone to scratches that are particularly noticeable in the ‘black & slab’ version.

It’s quite likely the Wi-Fi issues lie in the software and could be fixed easily with an update. Whether there is one in the pipeline, though, is still unknown, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out.
