Snaps purportedly showing the next-gen iPhone have leaked online, giving us some tantalising clues about what’s in store for us when the handset drops in September.

Sourced by our sister site Omio from an understandably secretive insider, the handset in the pictures sports the circular Apple home button that's been a fixture of every iDevice since time immemorial. So far, so familiar? Think again.

Observant tech fans will also notice that, as scribe Rob Kerr points out, said button “ends with an almost tapered finish to the bottom of the chassis", prompting him to speculate that this might be for the much-rumoured fingerprint scanner.

The unusual fluted addition could be to allow users to slide their thumb downwards for their whorls and whathaveyou to be read.

This tallies with previous leaks indicating that Apple will employ biometric security tech on its next effort and will secrete it within the home button. At one stage it had been thought the scanner could be located in the bezel that surrounds the forthcoming iPhone’s screen.

Chatter around the security feature was ramped up today after a dev discovered tell-tale code in a test version of Apple’s next smartphone operating system.

According to Omio’s source, the next iPhone, which comes disguised in Deff Cleave bumper, also stands out for being lightweight and impresses as a camera phone too.
