The next iPhone(s) will be along sooner than anticipated, murmurs from Apple’s manufacturing heartland suggest, amid signs that releasing your flagship phone ahead of schedule is emerging as one of 2014’s key trends.

Chinese analyst Sun Changxu told QQ Tech that supply-chain rumbles point to Apple ramping up production of its 2013 smartphones in May. That’s apparently with a view to launching the handset at the World Wide Developers Conference in June.

Those of you with longer memories will recall that June was the month Apple favoured for iPhone launches until the arrival of the iPhone 4 saw the tech giant shift the due date for product refreshes to September.

Changxu also claims that Cupertino will finally drop the much rumoured iPhablet on us this year and that said larger iPhone will be home to a screen that tops out at 5.7 inches.

Its running mate and the cheaper option, meanwhile, will it seems pack a 4.7-inch display with 1136 x 640 pixels per inch resolution. That’s still much larger than the current-gen top-end iPhone that sports a four-inch screen.

There’s no word whether the smaller, lower-cost handset will feature an iPhone 5C-style plastic build, in keeping with Apple’s approach to keeping its cheaper phone’s asking price down last time around.

Earlier this month, talk was abroad that the tech giant plans to trim the dimensions of the next-gen iPhone so that it comes in at just 6mm thick. By way of comparison, the iPhone 3GS was 12mm thick.
