Apple is busy trying to suss out how to power its forthcoming iWatch, it has emerged, with a number of experimental ideas being tested by Cupertino–based engineers.
Word is that the most–favoured option is magnetic induction. Already used by Nokia in its Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 devices, this would allow users to place their iWatch on a charging plate to give it added juice.
Sources also say that Apple is readying solar charging, with a panel baked into the iWatch so it powers up while being worn outside.
A further alternative is to use motion–charging, with a small unit able to draw power as users move their arms throughout the day. This is already available on a number of high-end timepieces.
It’s believed the latter two options are unlikely to see the light of day when the iWatch is released, possibly in autumn this year. But they could yet find their way to future Apple smartwatches.
Previous reports have suggested that Apple is struggling to find a way to power the iWatch sufficiently. Early rumours had pointed to the device using lower–power Bluetooth in order to draw information from a paired iPhone and cut down on power usage.
Other smartwatches, especially Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, have come in for sustained criticism for their short battery life.
