Which energy supplier has the best iPhone or Android app?

We look at several energy apps from the UK's biggest gas and electricity suppliers — EDF Energy, ScottishPower, SSE, British Gas, E.ON and npower — as well two of the biggest small suppliers, OVO Energy and First Utility.

The British Gas App

The app from British Gas is available for iPhone and Android. According to the energy giant, the app is designed to “Save time and hassle”.

It is also one of the most popular energy supplier apps out there — it's been downloaded by more than 1 million smartphone users and has more than 16,000 reviews in The App Store.

The current version of the app (as of January 2016) has a score of 2 stars, with some reviewers noting that basic features of the app such as submitting meter readings are often unavailable. Other users mentioned that the removal of Meter Reading History on the most current verion was a poor choice.

E.ON's app

This app from big six supplier (and uSwitch's Large Supplier of the Year) E.ON has a current rating of 3.5 stars in The App Store(as of January 2016).

  • Prepayment (Smart Pay as you Go) customers can now top up via the app
  • Submit meter readings
  • View account balance
  • Track your energy use over time
  • Get energy saving advice and 24-hour emergency contact info
  • Available for iPhone and Android

EDF Energy's app

What EDF Energy say about their app: "The new EDF Energy app makes it easier to manage your energy account on the go."

EDF Energy most recently updated their app in October 2015, updating performance and content.

However, the current version only rates a score of 2.5 stars from its users, who say some advertised features were either too difficult to find or nonexistent.

The app is availble for iPhone and Android.

First Utility's app

According to First Utility, their aim of their app is to help give customers the power to lower their usage and therfore their bills.

The app includes usage graphs and energy saving tips, and you can track weather and adjust your heating accordingly.

The app's current version has a score of 3 stars in the App Store (as of January 2016), with some users noting that it's easier to enter meter readings. Others reported bugs trying to install or update it.

npower's smartphone app

The app from big six supplier npower aims to help customers "Quickly access all your account information in one simple app."

As of January 2016, the app has a score of 4 stars for its current version in the Apple App Store, which is the highest score among the big six's apps (second-highest of all apps covered here, with Ovo Energy's app being top). Users rate the look of the app highly, but note that it is less user friendly and a bit slower.

OVO Energy's app

OVO Energy is yet another supplier aiming to deliver more than just meter reading and account access through their app — the app offers added features specifically for prepayment (PAYG) energy customers.

The current version rates a score of 4.5 in The App Store (as of January 2016), which is the highest of all apps covered here. Users seem to have nothing but nice things to say, not just for the app but for the supplier as well. (Read: OVO Energy ranks #1 in customer satisfaciton in latest uSwitch Energy Awards).

The Ovo Energy app is also available for Apple Watch users.

ScottishPower's smartphone app

ScottishPower's iPhone, iPad and Android-compatible app has similar features of its competitors, but has added another layer of convenience for certain customers: full integration with the Connect system, a smart thermostat heating control platform.

The current version of the ScottishPower app (as of January 2016) has 3 stars in The App Store, with some users noting an issue with syncing most current info and logging in.

  • Change to another ScottishPower tariff
  • Direct debit manager
  • View your bills and usage
  • Submit meter readings
  • Control the heating in your home (Connect customers only)

SSE's app

Big six supplier SSE's app is for now only for Apple users (iPad and iPhone) and promises the ability to "take back control of your gas and electricity bills."

The current version of the app (as of January 2016) did not have enough reviews to display a rating, but the overall rating of the app is currently 1.5 stars.

This is the lowest score of any supplier app mentioned here. Users note simple bugs have been ignored on simple functions, crashes and requirement of a separate account for the app.
