We look at several energy apps from the UK's biggest gas and electricity suppliers including EDF Energy, ScottishPower, SSE, British Gas, E.ON and npower, as well two of the biggest small suppliers, OVO Energy and First Utility. We also check out new supplier Powershop's innovative app that lets you buy energy packs.

The British Gas App

The British Gas app is available for iPhone and Android, and is designed to help users stay on top of their British Gas account.

The most recent version of the British Gas app has an impressive four-star rating in the Apple App Store based on nearly 900 reviews.

Many users comment on the ability to submit meter readings and book boiler servicing appointments being great features of this app.

In the Google App Store, the app has a similar score of 4.2 stars.

E.ON's app

This app from big six supplier and uSwitch's 2017 Large Supplier of the Year E.ON has a current rating of three stars in The App Store (as of October 2017).

With more around 130 reviews, there seem to be as many one star as five star ratings from users. Many reviewers reported problems logging in and not being able to submit a meter reading.

EDF Energy's app

The EDF Energy smartphone app allows customers to manage their account on the go by offering the ability to submit meter readings, view account info details (including balance) and even live chat with an advisor 24/7.

The current version of the app (as of October 2017) has 1.2 stars in the iTunes App Store, with several users complaining they simply can't the app to work for them at all.

The app doesn't fare much better in the Google Play Store, where it has a score of 2.5 and similar complaints of inability to get the app to open.

The app is availble for iPhone and Android.

First Utility's app

From submitting meter readings to managing payment options, the First Utility app aims to help customers manage their energy accounts from their smartphones.

The app's current version has (October 2017) has an impressive score of 4.1, with reviewers saying the app is "great", "easy to use" and "comprehensive."

The app fares similarly in the Android app store, with a score of 4.3.

  • Submit meter readings and review previous readings
  • Monitor your usage over time easily with graphs
  • Get help from a virtual assistant
  • Make a payment to your account or update your payment details
  • FAQs and contact info

npower's smartphone app

Do even more with your energy account right from your smartphone with npower's app.

As of October 2017, npower's app has a score of four stars in the Apple App Store (out of around 100 reviews). Many of the issues reported by reviewers seem to be one-offs.

The app scores lower for Android users at 3.5, out of nearly 6,000 reviews. Users report its slowness on some phones, and inability to open on others.

  • Log in with the same details as your online account
  • Submit meter readings with built-in torch
  • View your bill
  • Track your energy spend on a graph, including forecasting future usage in £, kWh or Co2

OVO Energy's app

The current app version (as of October 2017) rates 1.7 stars in the App Store, with many users reporting a recent update to the app has "downgraded" it.

The app does slightly better — 3.2 — in the Google Play Store. However, recent users have similar complaints, with one noting that the app is a mobile version of the website.

Powershop's smartphone app

Powershop is a newer energy supplier offering a very different kind of energy plan that utilises "powerpacks" that can be easily purchased in their app (as well as their online shop). Find out more about Powershop here.

The app gives customers insight into their usage in real time and forecast usage and cost. The supplier is so new to the market that the app doesn't currently have enough reviews to display a rating in the iTunes App Store.

  • Submit meter readings

ScottishPower's smartphone app

ScottishPower's iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android-compatible YourEnergy app has similar features of its competitors, but has added another layer of convenience for certain customers: full integration with the Connect system, a smart thermostat heating control platform.

The current version of the ScottishPower app (as of October 2017) does not have enough reviews to display a rating in the App Store.

For Android users, the app scores a fairly low 2.8, with many users reporting issues with smart meter data loading.
