Your driving licence could soon be stored on your smartphone, after the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) showed off plans to allow motorists to keep a digital version of their ID on a compatible iPhone.

The DVLA’s CEO Oliver Morley tweeted a picture of a UK driving licence stored on the official Apple Wallet app and described it as "a little prototype of something we’re working on".

Morley added that there was no timescale for launching a digital driving licence and that it would be an additional document rather than a replacement for the photo card that drivers are currently required to carry.

He said that ensuring security was solid was the DVLA’s main priority prior to launch and that the end of paper licences last year meant that the DVLA was able to begin thinking about a digital version.

Adding a driving licence to Apple Wallet makes increasing sense, with more and more everyday essentials moving onto the company’s digital wallet.

As well as boarding passes and loyalty cards, iPhone owners can access Apple Pay via the wallet app.
