Why the Motorola Moto G 2016 isn’t waterproof

The just-unveiled 2016 editions of the Motorola Moto G aren’t water-proof, a company rep has confirmed, marking something of a step back from the IPX7-certified third-generation model.

The water-resistant certification for last year’s Moto G meant it could be submerged in up to 3.28 feet of water for 30 minutes and come out unharmed.

However, this time around that’s not the case. According to Moto Product Expert Laton Honeyghan, the Moto 2 2016 is "dust-repellent with a splash guard, which means it’ll take a splash and rain. It’s still good with that. But it’s not IPX7-certified."

He went on to explain that Motorola looked at making the Moto G waterproof but opted not to after determining that customers didn't prioritise owning a waterproof phone. Research showed they were really more concerned about than owing a phone that could withstand everyday exposure to the elements.

The company also decided against water-proofing the Moto G because doing so means “adding gromits and nuts and bolts that adds extra bulk to it," Honeyghan said.

This year’s Moto G is available in two variants. There's a standard Moto G, which features a 5.5-inch screen, a 13-megapixel camera, a larger 3000mAh battery and an octa-core processor.

A higher-end Moto G Plus variant adds a fingerprint scanner and a 16-megapixel camera.
