Google Nexus Prime 'landing October', packs Android Ice Cream Sandwich

The next-gen Google Nexus smartphone is now a matter of weeks away, reports suggest, giving Fandroids their first chance to get on board with an all-new version of the Android operating system.

According to sources cited by South Korean site Electronic Times, the third-ever Nexus phone, variously informally dubbed the Nexus 3 or Nexus Prime, is set for launch in October.

In news that will come as no surprise to tech watchers, the handset will also be the first to showcase the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android. This is entirely in keeping with Google’s policy of using its own branded kits to set standards for third-party Android manufacturing partners.

The report goes on to confirm specifications for the device that first surfaced way back in June courtesy of the good, good people at Boy Genius Report.

Among them is a capacious 4.5-inch SuperAMOLED HD display with a PenTile layout that almost nudges the phone into tablet territory. And it’ll be home to a 1.5 GHz processor to keep everything ticking over smoother than a compilation of Yacht Rock jams, too.

However, the handset’s key selling point is undoubtedly Ice Cream Sandwich, which will for the first time bring the key functions of Android tablets to phones powered by the OS.

Google is once again expected to enlist Samsung to manufacture the phone on its behalf, marking the second time the Nexus S phone-maker has been chosen for a Google-branded handset.
