Samsung and Google are working on a deluxe, Nexus-branded tablet, leaks suggest, as the search giant bids to repeat the success of the compact Nexus 7 with a more conventionally sized slate.

According to Richard Sim, an analyst with NDP DisplaySearch, the device packs a 10.1-inch screen with a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel display. That equates to something like 299 pixels per inch. By way of comparison, the latest iPad is home to a 9.7-inch retina display with 264 pixels per inch.

Shim described the device as “high-end” – in what we’re guessing is very marked contrast to the $99 Nexus tablet that’s also purported to be in Google’s product pipeline – and claims it will feature Samsung Galaxy and Nexus branding.

The sole Google tablet so far, the Nexus 7, is a collaboration with Asus aimed squarely at the nascent market for cheaper slates and priced at just £159.

News of Google’s plans comes as Apple is reportedly about to bring a smaller tablet to market. Informally dubbed the iPad Mini by tech-watchers, the device is set to pack a 7.85-inch screen and dispense with 3G connectivity and a rear-facing camera to keep costs down.
