Google Nexus 7 update to pack HD screen, beefier processor, says analyst

An analyst has added fuel to rumours that Google will drop a revamped version of its Nexus 7 tablet at the I/O event later this week, as the countdown to the search giant’s annual developer's conference enters its final stage.

According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the fresh take on Google’s own-branded tablet will differ from the current-gen Nexus 7 principally through the inclusion of a 1920x1200 pixel screen that supports full HD. The move is aimed at bringing Google’s challenger more in line with the iPad mini.

A more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor will also be on board, as will a five-megapixel camera, plus a two megapixel front-facing number and will run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box.

Less welcome, though, is that Kuo anticipates that the Nexus 7’s 4,325 mAh battery will be replaced by a smaller 4,000 mAh cell.

However, that’s ameliorated somewhat by the fact that pricing is set to be unchanged, with would-be owners able to pick up the entry-level model 16GB, Wi-Fi model for $199 sans contract.
