Could Netflix be launching a free tier subscription soon?

Netflix is by far the biggest name in streaming. And as such, the price of its subscriptions have slowly started to creep up in recent years. But could we be seeing the introduction of a free tier coming to Netflix soon?

This wouldn’t be unheard of, as another major streaming service, Spotify, has always included a free tier subscription. The free tier option has a number of limitations on its service and includes non-skippable ads during playback. But many of us will have signed up to Spotify free to test it out before eventually committing to a paid subscription.

So is Netflix looking to replicate this formula?

Netflix free subscriptions in Kenya

At the time of writing, there is reportedly an option for Android smartphone users in Kenya to get access to a Netflix subscription for free.

A statement from Netflix said, “At Netflix, we want everyone to be able to enjoy the suspense of Blood & Water, the romance of Bridgerton and the adventure of Army of the Dead. Now we’re giving audiences in Kenya the chance to experience these stories for themselves — completely free of charge.

“Today, we’re launching a free plan that allows people to enjoy Netflix ad-free on Android mobile phones in Kenya. When you sign-up, no payment information is required. All you have to do is enter your email, confirm you are 18 or over and create a password. Then you can sit back and watch many of Netflix’s most popular series and films, as well as enjoy our personalized recommendations, parental controls, and profiles (including kids).

“If you’ve never watched Netflix before — and many people in Kenya haven’t — this is a great way to experience our service. And if you like what you see, it’s easy to upgrade to one of our paid plans so you can enjoy our full catalog on your TV or laptop as well.

“The free plan will start rolling out in Kenya today over the next few weeks. We hope it’s a great match and that many of the people who try our free plan love Netflix so much that over time they upgrade to a full, paid subscription.”

The free-tier Netflix subscription gives users in Kenya access to a large catalogue of Netflix content, as well as offering personalised recommendations, parental controls and profile set up. And while it’s not 100% clear just how much content free users will have access to, big names like Bridgerton and Army of the Dead were included in the press release. Which could be enough to get new users hooked on Netflix original shows.

Are free Netflix subscriptions available in the UK?

The introduction of free-tier subscriptions is an attempt by the streaming service to grab hold of new users who have never used the platform before. As the press release says, those who enjoy the content they watch on their Android smartphones are encouraged to upgrade to a full subscription to watch on other devices and larger screens.

There’s nothing to say that Netflix won’t bring this “try-before-you-buy” option to UK markets to help grow its user base. However, this is very unlikely in our opinion, especially given that Netflix UK no longer offers even a free 7-day trial for new users. But time will tell.
