Nokia’s flagship smartphone for 2011 will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress in February, mounting speculation suggests, as Espoo bids to turn around its fortunes after a disappointing last 12 months.

Rumours that the handset will make its debut at the event stem principally from Twitter updates from influential Nokia blogger Josue Gimenez, who’s in little doubt that we’ve just weeks to wait now until Nokia unwraps the N9. According to Gimenez, the Finns won’t be letting the grass grow under its feet either and plan to have the smartphone on sale in March – presumably SIM free only initially, as is Nokia’s wont.

Alas, there's no further news about the phone's spec sheet. However, a series of leaks suggest we’re in for a handset packing a 4.2-inch AMOLD touchscreen, physical QWERTY keypad and 12 megapixel snapper with HD video recording.

It’s also expected to be home to 64GB of internal memory and feature a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor to keep everything ticking over smoothly. But perhaps the biggest news is that it’ll run Nokia’s latest operating system Meego. The public's reception to the platform is regarded as critical to the company's chances of competing at the top end of the smartphone market, after its current gen Symbian 3 platform came in for heavy criticism that it's sluggish and over complex.

This year's MWC takes place in Barca between February 14th and 17th.
