Nokia is prepping an extensive overhaul of the Symbian 3 operating system, a leaked snap suggests, breathing fresh air into the flagship N8 and C7 smarties.

An image of the N8 running the rejigged OS was sighted during a talk from Nokia’s Jo Harlow, where a keen-eyed rep from Chinese site Baidu picked up on it.

Among the changes from Symbian 3’s current iteration are a new look for your inbox and weather widgets, plus a dedicated status bar sitting slag bang at the top of the handset’s display.

There’s also a notably cleaner and more modern look all round, suggesting that Nokia might be learning its lesson in the wake of heavy criticism of the Symbian 3 platform.

The apparent leak comes after the Finnish phone maker recently inked a deal with Microsoft that will see it produce handsets based on the company’s Windows Phone 7 software.

The first fruits of the “strategic agreement” between the firms are expected before the end of the year.
