Problems with Yahoo Mail are at the root of a fault with Windows Phone 7 handsets that caused them to rapidly eat up owners’ data allowances, Microsoft has disclosed.

The issue with phones running the Big M’s OS surfaced on blogs and forums at the start of Jan. According to a number of users, their WP7 phones were sending data even when their 3G capability was turned off. Some even claimed that usage was being expended when the handsets were in airplane mode.

If a number of owners’ testimonies are to believed, in certain cases up to 5MB of data was being used up every hour, potentially landing those affected with a bill shock at the month's end.

In a statement issued today, Microsoft has addressed the problem and has promised that a fix is on the way soon.

We have determined that an inefficiency exists in the synchronisation of email between the Windows Phone Mail client and Yahoo Mail.

"This inefficiency can result in larger than expected data usage for a very small percentage of users."

"Microsoft and Yahoo have worked together to identify a fix, which will be rolled out in the coming weeks.”
