iPad mini white official

Undersupply issues with the iPad Mini will persist throughout the seasonal period and well into next year, it has been claimed, as Apple’s display suppliers continue to wrestle with mass production problems.

According to sources at AU Optronics (AUO) and LG Display (LGD) cited by DigiTimes, the problems will mean that Apple is likely to undershoot its fourth-quarter shipment target for the iPad Mini by 40 per cent.

Apple had previously forecast shipments of around ten million for the period. Assuming our sources’ gen can be trusted, that would leave the tech giant some 4 million off-target as it goes head to head with the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD in the crucial Christmas quarter.

Worse for Apple, though, is that the sources also claim that supply targets for the in-demand tablet won’t be reached until the first quarter of next year, suggesting that the problem, which purportedly significantly eats into suppliers’ margins, may not be fully under control until March.

News of teething troubles with the slate come after it was heavily criticised in some quarters for failing to incorporate the Retina display technology that has featured in standard-sized iPads since its third-generation iteration.

This is expected to be addressed in the iPad Mini 2, which is apparently set to ditch the current models’ 1024 x 768 panel for lusher 2048 x 1536 resolution screen.
