BlackBerry might be in the midst of a huge boardroom crisis, but it’s still found time to tweak its BBM iOS and Android apps, fixing bugs and adding a slew of new functionality in the process.

iOS users can now use the service on iPads and iPods, as long as they’re running iOS 6 or higher. A bug which saw contact names go missing has also been fixed.

The Android app should no longer drain battery life and now has support for BBM contact categories. The company has also tweaked group list sorting for Google users, so it’s easier to pool your pals in one place and have a chat with them all at the same time.

Both now offer the option to find friends using BBM via other social networks, a key factor of the service is going to take on and beat the likes of WhatsApp and Snapchat.

BBM has been a rare success story for BlackBerry in 2013. Its Android and iOS apps were downloaded 10 million times in their first 24 hours on Google Play and the App Store respectively.
