What is boiler cover?

Boiler cover fully or partially covers any bills you might receive as a result of your boiler needing repairs. Ensuring you have at least some boiler cover will mitigate the risk of your boiler breaking down and leaving you without heating and/or hot water. As always, the more comprehensive your policy, the more expensive it will be.

What types of boiler cover are there?

Boiler-only cover

This type of policy just covers the boiler and will be among the cheapest options you’re offered.

Boiler + central heating cover

This type of policy covers the boiler and your wider central heating system.

Full home care plan

This type of policy could have a different name but will be easily identifiable because it covers the boiler and central heating system plus general plumbing, drains and electrical issues.

What's the difference between boiler cover and central heating cover?

The difference between boiler and central heating cover is that boiler cover only insures the boiler itself, while central heating cover protects the boiler and the wider central heating system, including pipes and controls. Central heating cover will usually be more expensive than boiler-only cover because it includes a greater level of maintenance.

What does boiler cover include?

Boiler cover can include any of the following:

  • Full or partial cover for repairs

  • Annual service

  • Central heating cover

  • Unlimited engineer call-outs

  • 24-hour/emergency help

  • Repairs relating to general home emergencies

How do I choose the best boiler cover deal?

The best boiler cover deal is different for everyone depending on their motivations for getting one in the first place. If you want cover that doesn’t cost much, the boiler cover deal for you might be one of the cheaper options. If you want to know that you can get an engineer call-out whenever you need one, the best boiler cover deal will be one that promises short wait times for an engineer to visit.

Do I need boiler cover?

You don’t necessarily need boiler cover - it’s not a legal requirement - but it’s a sensible expense because it could save you a significant amount of money if anything goes wrong with your boiler, especially if you own your home and boiler cover isn’t already included in your general home insurance policy.

If you rent, it’s the landlord’s responsibility to ensure the boiler is in good working order, so you shouldn’t need to take out boiler cover.

How can I save money on boiler cover?

You can save money on boiler cover by shopping around and not sticking with your current provider when your deal comes to an end. Because introductory offers are usually offered at a favourable rate, you may find that your rates go up when the first 12 months are up.

You can also save money by paying a call-out fee should you need an engineer to visit - this isn’t usually compulsory, but can mean your monthly fee is less than it otherwise would be.

FAQs

How does boiler cover work?

Boiler cover works the same way as other types of insurance. You pay a monthly fee to ensure you’re covered, and will also pay a fee towards the cost of any engineer call-outs you need over the course of your policy.

How much is boiler cover?

The cost of boiler cover will vary depending on the level of cover you’re looking for. The most comprehensive policies will cost more than the most basic policies. It depends what you’re looking for in a policy and how much you’re prepared to spend to get it.

What types of boiler can I get cover for?

You should be able to take out boiler cover on any type of boiler. Most people have either a combi, condensing or gas boiler, but some have boilers powered by other fuels, such as biomass or liquid petroleum gas (LPG). Some providers may not cover these boilers, so check before you sign up.

How soon can I claim after taking out cover?

You can make a claim as soon as your cover’s been confirmed.

Do I lose boiler cover if I switch energy supplier?

No - your boiler cover is independent of your energy supplier (even if you get both your boiler cover and energy from the same company), so switching won’t mean you lose your boiler cover.

Is boiler cover included in home insurance?

Boiler cover can be included in home insurance, so it’s worth checking if that’s the case before you sign up to a policy you potentially don’t need.

How do I cover boiler pipes

If you have any unsightly exposed boiler pipes, you’ll want to cover them from an aesthetic point of view, but you’ll also want to cover pipes in order to improve their insulation. You can do this with strips of pipe wrap and by ensuring that holes where pipes go through the wall are properly filled in.
