BT Sport free on EE FAQ: how you can watch Premier League football for free

What exactly do you get with EE's free BT Sport sub?

It's only been a few weeks since Leicester celebrated their historic victory in the Premier League, but it's almost time for the next season to start.

The action kicks off on August 13th, and for the first time you can watch it without paying any money.

That's thanks to a new offer from mobile operator EE, which is giving away six months' free access to BT Sport. This has been facilitated by the fact that EE is now owned by BT.

So which games can you watch? Who's eligible? And what devices can you watch on? Read on, and all will be revealed.

Is it true I can watch Premier League football for free?

It is indeed. It has been possible to stream Premier League matches online for free before, but only from highly illegal sources, which we wouldn't recommend doing.

Thanks to the new offer, you can watch matches completely legally without shelling out for a subscription to Sky Sports or BT Sport, the only two UK broadcasters with Premier League rights. Which will save you a bundle.

All you need to do is switch your phone contract to EE.

Which EE customers can benefit?

You'll need to be a pay monthly handset, tablet or SIM-only EE customer.

Then, starting from July 27th, you'll be able to sign up to six months' free access to the BT Sport app.

Pay monthly plans start at £14.99 a month, while SIM-only prices start at just £9.99 a month for phones, and £11 a month for tablets.

If you're an existing customer, you can watch it too. To do so, just text SPORT to 150 from your EE pay monthly phone.

How many matches will be shown?

BT Sport will show 42 Premier League matches this season, though the deal only gives you six months' free access, so you won't be able to watch all of them without paying extra.

BT has only announced the first tranche of matches, which include Manchester City vs Sunderland on the season's opening day, Leicester vs Arsenal on August 20th, Liverpool vs Leicester on September 10th and Arsenal vs Chelsea on September 24th.

Unfortunately Sky has the lion's share of the broadcast rights, so you'll need a pricey Sky Sports subscription to watch most games.

Can I watch other sports?

aviva premiership rugby

You can. The deal gives you free access to everything the BT Sport app has to offer.

This includes the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Emirates FA Cup, UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), Aviva Premiership Rugby, SPFL (Scottish Professional Football League), European Rugby Champions Cup, America's Cup and MotoGP.

However, it's worth remembering you only get six months' free access.

So if you sign up purely to watch one tournament or match, make sure it falls within the six-month timeframe.

What devices can I watch on?

The BT Sport app is available for iOS, Android, and Windows 10 smartphones and tablets. You can download it from the Google Play Store, App Store and Microsoft Store.

Seeing as BT now owns EE, we would also expect the app to arrive on the EE TV streaming box before too long. But there's been no announcement so far.

What you can't do is watch BT Sport on your laptop or TV if you're an EE customer. To do that you'd need to be a BT broadband customer.

What happens once the six-month free period has expired?

Once the free period is up, the app reverts to a 30-day rolling add-on that costs £5 a month.

So you can still enjoy sports action on your mobile or tablet that you'd usually have to subscribe to BT Sport to see, but it will cost you.

However, £5 a month is a lot cheaper than paying for a full subscription to BT Sport, so it could be worth keeping if you're not too fussed about watching it on your TV.

The two firms have also announced that this is "the first of a series of BT benefits to be made available to EE customers".

So look out for more deals in the future.
