The Toshiba TG01 mobile phone will be exclusive to Orange, it has been revealed, quashing speculation that O2 would be the handset’s sole UK carrier.
Reports last week had named O2 as the frontrunner in the race to secure rights for the TG01 after sealing an exclusivity deal with Toshiba to sell the phone in Germany.
However, Orange has now emerged as the victor and will be offering the mobile for free from this weekend on selected contracts, starting from £39.15 per month over 24 months.
Francois Mathieu, director of devices at Orange UK, said: "We're really pleased to have teamed up with Toshiba to bring the TG01 exclusively to the UK.
"We believe the TG01 is a prime example of manufacturer innovation, and is a device that is at the very top of its game, which will allow users to make the most from their mobile experience."
Standout features of the mobile include a large 4.1-inch touchscreen, a five megapixel camera and social networking application Nimbuzz pre-installed.
However, the phone’s unique selling point among technology fans is that it will be the first mass market mobile to employ the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset.
This promises to make it quicker and more powerful than rival mobile phones and allow users to seamlessly run applications simultaneously.
