Nokia’s huge PR push helped the Lumia 800 smartphone to sales of one million in the first three months of release, an analyst claims, suggesting that previous forecasts from industry-watchers could have been overly pessimistic.

According to Morgan Stanley, the Windows Phone handset, which heralds a fresh start for Nokia, hit the landmark figure during the last quarter of 2011. Other analysis companies had predicted sales as low as 500,000 for the period.

How content Nokia is with those numbers isn’t clear. But it’ll definitely be relieved that those headlines some wags wanted to write about the phone flopping in the face of competition from the iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy Nexus now most likely won’t see the light of day.

And there’s better news on the horizon for the one-time market leader in the long-term too.

Morgan Stanley predicts that by the end of this year, it will have shipped a whopping 37 million Lumia phones and that in 2013 this will have reached 64 million units.

The exponential growth in demand for Lumia kits is likely to be driven by the sheer promotional heft that Microsoft and Nokia jointly wield, as well as the arrival of cheaper Nokia Windows phones, such as the Lumia 710.
