Future iPhones could offer Android-levels of scope for customisation, Apple’s head honcho has revealed, in a sign that the phone-maker may finally be ready to trust its fans with their own smartphones.
Speaking at AllThingsD’s tech talking shop, Apple CEO Tim Cook disclosed that Apple may be ready to relax its rigid grip on how iPhone owners use their handset and might even allow them to customise their homescreen or keyboard a la Android.
He said: "I think you will see us open up more in the future. But not to the degree that we put the customer at risk of having a bad experience.”
What we probably shouldn’t count on, however, is this loosening of the reins on its smartphone OS happening any time soon.
That said, while Apple probably isn’t ready to relinquish the keys to its walled garden right now, Cook seemed to imply that the new version of Apple’s iOS software, helmed by Jonathan Ive, will indeed be a very different beast.
Asked if the fresh take on the platform really will be the major change some hve been lobbying for, he said he’d “let you be the judge of that”, before noting that Ive’s contribution has been “really key” to the creation of iOS 7.
Ive’s influence on the platform is expected to see Apple do away with cutesy skeuomorphic touches in favour of a “flatter” and more streamlined look and feel.
