Nintendo plotting ‘smart device’ move

Gaming giant Nintendo says it is planning a move into the world of ‘smart devices’, following another poor set of financial results for the company behind Mario and Zelda.

Speaking in Osaka, Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata said: “We are thinking about a new business structure. Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business.

"It’s not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone.”

That appears to rule out some of Nintendo’s classics cropping up on the App Store or Google Play, at least for now.

However, rumours of a Nintendo tablet using Android were rampant at the end of last year. While these proved to be unfounded, such a move may not seem so unlikely now.

A branded slate with access to classic and new titles would at least help Nintendo, which refuses to licence its characters for mobile games, gain a foothold in a market dominated by Apple and Google.
