Exclusive: Three prioritises free roaming in more countries ahead of 4G overseas

Three customers can expect to be able to roam for free in more countries soon, but shouldn't hold their breath for a 4G service when they're overseas, the network's Chief Executive Officer has suggested.

David Dyson outlined Three's plan to prioritise the company’s Feel At Home free 3G roaming ahead of launching 4G roaming at a press call attended by uSwitch Tech.

Feel At Home enables customers to use their UK 3G data, text and calling allowances in 11 different countries.

Other networks, such as Vodafone and EE, are now offering 4G roaming around the world, while Three has been fairly quiet on this subject until now.

Asked if 4G will be part of Feel At Home scheme soon, Dyson said: "We'd like to, but again it comes back to commercials and finding the right balance.

"We'd also need to make sure that that if we do that, we do it where the market demand is.

"Most applications, and most of the things people do on a smartphone don't necessarily need 4G right now."

He added: "There is a small group of people that absolutely demand it.

"But I don't want to distract away from putting stuff out that will benefit a much bigger majority by trying to satisfy that minority position.

"Getting France and Spain on board is a far bigger priority for me than essentially getting 4G in Latvia or wherever it might be.

"It's about picking battles. We're a big organisation, we have to be selective around what we do.

"We'll look to consumer feedback and the demand. But what I'll say right now is that 4G overseas is a small priority than actually free roaming overseas."

News of Three's plans come after it recently confirmed a series of changes across its tariffs, including scrapping unlimited tethering on its popular One plan for new customers.

It has, however, ameliorated the change to its contracts with free 0800 calls and free upgrades to 4G.
