Aldi Medion Life E4001 on sale now, costs just £80

Budget supermarket Aldi's first smartphone is now on sale. And as you'd expect, it's very cheap indeed.

The Medion Life E4001 costs just £80 – that would have been a steal a while ago, but now we have the likes of the wallet-friendly Moto E and Nokia Lumia 630, Aldi isn't short of competition.

So how do the specs stack up?

It has a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB onboard storage that you can beef up with a microSD card up to 32GB.

It's pretty small by today's standards, with a 4-inch screen, and the 480x800-pixel resolution leaves a lot to be desired.

There's a 2-megapixel camera on the back – shockingly low compared to even budget rivals – and no front-facer, so video calls are out.

It does run Android KitKat though, which is the latest version of Google's mobile operating system. So it is doing something right.

Aldi has also relaunched its Lifetab tablet, though it hasn't boosted the specs.

Can Aldi compete with the likes of Motorola and Nokia at the budget end of the market? Probably not, but it's another cheap option, and that's always a good thing.
