Vodafone Wi-Fi calling scheme: 5 things you need to know

Lack of mobile phone signal is the bane of modern life. But, thanks to Vodafone, if you live in a reception blackspot then the days of hanging out of a window and praying to the 4G gods could be behind you. At last.

The carrier this week launched a new scheme that lets you make phone calls using nothing more than a Wi-Fi connection.

Sound too good to be true? Let’s take a closer look in our five-point, bite-sized guide to its caveats, conditions and call charges.

1 You can make calls from anywhere that has Wi-Fi

Whether you’re at home, in a basement, on the tube or in a cafe, if there’s a Wi-Fi connection then you’ll be able to make calls to any UK number. Even if the person you’re calling isn’t on Vodafone.

However, it's worth noting that at the moment, your phone won’t be able to switch from using mobile signal to Wi-Fi if you’re on a call on the move and the reception drops out.

But that’s something Vodafone is working on, so watch this space.

2 You don’t need a special app

Unlike some other Wi-Fi calling schemes, you don’t need to download a special app and open it every time you want to make a call.

Instead, you just hop into your phone settings and switch it on. Then whenever there’s no signal your phone will connect calls using the available Wi-Fi.

3 Some numbers won’t work

There are some caveats to Vodafone’s ‘phone anyone’ approach. Mainly that you won’t be able to make calls to '08' numbers or international numbers through the scheme.

Travellers should stop getting excited too. You won’t be able to take advantage of Wi-Fi calling when you’re abroad either.

4 And you’ll need the right phone

This is the biggest caveat of all. Vodafone is launching the scheme with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, so you’ll have to upgrade to one of those handsets when they go on sale if you want to get involved.

You’ll also need to be on the right Vodafone plan. So it’s bad news for pay as you go customers, who won’t be able to use Wi-Fi calling at all.

Pay monthly customers will need a Red, Red Value Bundle, Red+ or Business Premier accounts.

5 It won’t cost any more than normal calls

Any calls you make using the Wi-Fi calling feature will come out of your minutes as normal.

So you don’t pay any more to call via Wi-Fi but, equally, you don’t pay any less.
