About Barnsley Building Society

Barnsley Building Society started life in 1853, in an office above a grocers shop in the town. The society soon became the dominant society in the local area and by the 1890s they had opened several branches to make it easier for the working class population to save their money.

Over the next century, the fortunes of the Barnsley Building Society waxed and waned as other regional societies expanded and merged with one another. By the late 1990s, the society had expanded and the brand was doing well, but heavy exposure to the Icelandic Banking crash at the beginning of the global recession left them in a vulnerable position.

In 2008, Barnsley Building Society was bought out by the Yorkshire Building Society Group. However the society has retained its distinctive branding and there are still Barnsley Building Society branches in towns across South Yorkshire.

Applications for Barnsley Building Society mortgages can be made in branches or over the telephone. The society has a selection of different mortgage products available at any given time, including two and five year fixed and tracker deals, but deals may be withdrawn without notice.

Personal identification documents and evidence of financial status will be required in order for the right mortgage product to be recommended. A credit reference search will be performed before a Barnsley Building Society mortgage offer is made.

Barnsley Building Society mortgages are suitable for first time buyers, existing customers, and homeowners looking to move house or switch to a more competitive deal.

Interest is calculated daily on all Barnsley Building Society mortgages. Some mortgages offered by the Barnsley Building Society have a degree of flexibility and customers can make overpayments or take payment holidays.
