Trials of a device which harnesses broadband connections to make houses more secure have been pronounced a success by BT and its partner Intamec.

The scheme, which involved 1,500 households, saw homes fitted with BT Homesafe - an innovative application which enables users to remotely monitor their properties with CCTV cameras.

Users can also manage sensors and notifications by sending text messages, phone or e-mail - with the option to add sensors for fire, flooding and power cuts.

Commenting on the trial, Kevin Meagher, chief executive officer of Intamac Systems, said: "It’s a revolutionary new approach and the trial has been very successful in helping us to refine the product and service.

"Extending pilot will show the practical value of the new technology in protecting people and their property at price points that were not possible in the past. We believe this technology will become standard in all homes."

The system retails for £219.99.
