Lucky residents in Wales and London will be the first large group of broadband users to try out BT's new super-fast network.

Muswell Hill in the north of the capital and Whitchurch in South Glamorgan have been selected as the two areas which will pilot BT's fibre-to-the-cabinet next summer.

Up to 15,000 home and business customers in each area will enjoy speeds of up to 40Mb once their local networks are upgraded.

Explaining the decisions to choose the two locations, a BT spokesperson commented: "This is part of our £1.5 billion investment in optical fibre deployments, and the sites were chosen in consultation with comms providers, ISPs, Regional Development Associations and because of the topology of the exchange."

BT announced the move to set up a £1.5 billion high-speed broadband network, planned to reach 40 per cent of the British population, in July this year.
