An MP has welcomed the news that households and businesses in the Winchester area are to gain access to high-speed broadband.

Leading internet service provider BT has announced that nine communities in Hampshire are to be included in the latest round of its next-generation broadband rollout, including Bishop’s Waltham and Harestock.

The Hampshire Chronicle reports that 86,000 homes and businesses in the county will soon be able to take advantage of the super-fast features of BT's Infinity service.

Speaking to the news provider, George Hollingbery, MP for Meon Valley, praised BT's latest announcement.

He commented: "It's great to know that both the Bishop's Waltham and Horndean areas are being brought up to speed but I would like to see all of the constituency with this sort of technology very soon."

BT is currently investing £2.5 billion upgrading telephone exchanges around the UK to support high-speed broadband.
