Virgin Media launches new 4G SIM only plans with data rollover and free WhatsApp

Virgin Media has unveiled a range of 4G SIM only plans, with the sweetener of being able to rollover unused data from month to month. You can also use WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger without eating into your data allowance.

The SIM only plans operate on a 30-day, rolling-contract basis and start from £6 per month. That gets you monthly allowances of 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 300MB of data.

Virgin Media’s top-end, premium SIM only plan is £25 per month, which will get you 5000 minutes, unlimited texts and 20GB of data.

£6 £9 £12 £15 £25
Minutes 300 1,500 2,500 2,500 5,000
Texts Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Data 300MB 1GB 2GB 4GB 20GB

Unlike, for example, FreedomPop there’s no charge to roll over data and anything unused is rolled over automatically and used up first the following month. Winningly there’s no limit on how much you can keep.

The caveat is that you can only roll over data from the previous month. This prevents you from stockpiling a huge trove of unused data.

Still, any data you do roll over will get used up first. So you won’t start eating into your allowance until after you’ve used the amount you rolled over from the previous month.

Virgin Media’s 4G plans are also available as Freestyle contracts. Much like O2’s Refresh scheme, these split the cost of your monthly allowances and contract and are intended to make it cheaper and easier to upgrade to a new phone mid-contract.

Both the SIM only and Freestyle plans allow subscribers to switch to a different tariff with 30-days’ notice. They also include unlimited calls to Virgin Media numbers, as well as use of 250,000 WiFi hotspots when you download the Virgin Media WiFi app for Android or iPhone.

Peter Kelly, Managing Director of Mobile at Virgin Media, said: “Virgin Media’s new mobile plans are fast, flexible and filled with data.

“By offering free messaging on WhatsApp and Messenger we’re making sure that Virgin Media customers never have to worry about messaging friends or family and if there’s data left over at the end of the month then we’ve got that covered too.

“With 4G our customers have a quicker way to browse, message, stream and play wherever they are.”
