British Gas launches EnergySmart
EnergySmart is not an energy plan, but an add-on that is available with certain British Gas tariffs. It comes with a range of benefits, including accurate monthly bills and a free electricity monitor.
British Gas says that the EnergySmart scheme will allow customers to receive accurate energy bills, giving them the chance to submit their meter readings monthly via the internet, text or through an automated voice system.
A reminder to provide a meter read will arrive every month, five days before the customer's chosen billing date.
Bills can then be paid via Direct Debit, or credit/debit card online or over the phone.
The customer will also have access to an online area through the scheme, which allows them to track their monthly energy consumption and set targets to reduce their future usage, as well as providing a range of energy saving tips and the ability to predict their next bill.
The free electricity monitor can help customers track exactly how much electricity they are using and when they are using it and may also highlight areas where customers could reduce their usage, helping them to save money on their energy bills.
Will Marples, uSwitch energy expert, says: "It is very encouraging to see one of the UK's big suppliers actively combating the age-old issue of estimated billing. The message from customers is clear that they want accurate bills, not only to help with basic household budgeting, but also to allow them to be more efficient management of the energy they use, and giving them greater control generally. Before the roll out of Smart Meters to all of the UK's households, simple steps like this are essential in the quest for more efficient energy usage."
