Although various rehashes of classic titles from the late '80s and early '90s are already common in the App Store, it looks as if retro gaming on the iPhone is about to get a little better thanks to an official emulator created by Sega to run Mega Drive games.
The app will be called Ultimate Genesis according to reports from Gizmodo. It borrows the US name given to the 16 bit console that was known as the Mega Drive here in the UK.
Rumours suggest that Space Harrier 2 will come bundled with the app and new games will be downloadable from within the app itself, which is a nice touch.
From the day of its release, a small selection of timeless classics will be available to buy, including Golden Axe and Sonic the Hedgehog, with many more games planned.
Hopefully Sega will have put some serious effort into the emulation software, as there is nothing worse than seeing an ancient game running poorly on modern hardware.
