iPhone 4 upgrades account for 77 per cent of sales

After the iPhone 4 was launched last week, the loyalty of Apple customers has been highlighted in a study that found that 77 per cent of those buying the smartphone were replacing an older iPhone model.

Staff in Apple Stores in San Francisco, Mineapolis and New York asked 608 customers which mobiles they were upgrading with their new iPhone 4 purchase on the day of launch.

Of the sample just six per cent were replacing a BlackBerry, whilst three per cent were making the switch from Android, with other alternatives representing the remainder, US finance Bible Fortune reports.

Apple has managed to increase the number of repeat iPhone customers year-on-year ever since it launched the smartphone and in 2010 an impressive 54 per cent of buyers went for the more expensive 32GB model.

Interestingly, 28 per cent said they owned an iPad, with a majority of non-iPad owners saying they were planning to purchase Apple's tablet computer within the next year.
