Apple explains iPhone 4 signal issues

Apple has said that the reason for dropped calls and reception issues with the iPhone 4 is that the mobile does not properly display the level of signal it is actually receiving.

To fix this problem, the company is creating a software update, although it could still be a couple of weeks before this arrives.

The issues allegedly stem from an algorithm that is incorrectly formulated within the iPhone 4, consequently causing some users to see multiple bars of reception being displayed when in reality the level of network coverage in their area is far lower.

In an open letter to iPhone 4 owners, Apple stated:"Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays two more bars than it should for a given signal strength … users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don't know it because we are erroneously displaying four or five bars."

The most bizarre part of this story is that Apple is convinced that the issues have been present since the original iPhone arrived three years ago. Every iPhone generation, except the first, will get a software fix to solve this issue in the near future.

It had originally been assumed that the iPhone 4 was suffering from hardware problems, as holding the phone in a particular manner seemed to kill off the signal in some situations.

Any user who is not willing to wait for a software fix may return their iPhone 4 for a complete refund within a month of buying it.
