A new iPhone app has landed that converts Chinese symbols into English, using the smartphone's camera to view and interpret printed text.

When the iPhone's camera is pointed at symbols, version 2.2 of the Pleco Chinese Dictionary app recognises and translates entire portions of a page within a matter of seconds, according to the Daily iPhone blog.
It is compatible with any iPhone running iOS 4, but the developer warns that the best results are achievable on the iPhone 4, with the 3G S being a little slower.
Pending approval from the App Store, the updated app should only be a few weeks from launch and judging by the video evidence it could be a very useful piece of software for students and travellers.
