Reports that Apple will opt for the sobriquet ‘4S’ for its next handset rather than ‘iPhone 5' were lent fresh credence today, as the tech world girds its loins for the year’s biggest smartphone event.
Images of a case from Otterbox, which were unearthed by Will Strafach of the Chronic Dev Team hacking cabal, reveal the title ‘iPhone 4S’. And what’s more to our eyes betray no signs of photo tampering.
Assuming the images are the real deal, it could mean one of two things. One of these is that the iPhone 4S is the name Apple has chosen for the phone most industry watchers assumed would be called iPhone 5.
Equally plausible, though is the case is evidence that alongside the iPhone 5, we’re also in line for a fresh take on the iPhone 4, which could either be an iterative update or a cheaper, more compact model aimed at more cost-conscious iFans.
Either way, it looks like we won’t have too long to wait to find out, with speculation now pegging Apple’s grand reveal as taking place on October 4th or 5th. If you haven't already, diarise it now.
