Apple could be developing an official physical joypad for the iPad, it has emerged, as it bids to boost its slate’s appeal to gamers.
According to a source cited by AnandTech, the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on a “project to bring a physical controller to market”, although concedes that there’s some doubt whether it will ever see the light of day.
The report comes after the company equipped its latest slate with a brawny A5X processor to boost its ability to handle lush in-game graphics and more complex games smoothly.
Assuming AnandTech's report is based on fact, the peripheral would represent something of an admission that punters will eventually tire of the casual games of the sort that currently dominate the App Store and only use simple controls in favour of more involving titles.
However, Apple’s refusal to get involved with physical controllers in the past and espousal of touchscreens and touchscreen gaming suggests to us that would-be buyers shouldn’t hold their breath.
