Apple readying two iPhones for July launch, including budget model

Apple is reportedly working on not one, but two new iPhones, with a view to release both this summer, an industry analyst has forecast.

According to Peter Misek of Jefferies & co, the iMaker is “currently testing two new iPhone prototypes” – a slightly upgraded premium model called the iPhone 5S, and the long-rumoured cheaper, smaller version, which has been widely (and unofficially) designated the iPhone ‘mini’.

However, Misek emphasised that the latter wouldn’t simply be a “cheap iPhone” as many industry types are claiming and will instead be a “low-cost” model similar to the iPad mini that offers modest features for a keener price point.

He said the budget iPhone will sport a more economical polycarbonate case and still cram in a four-inch display like the iPhone 5, but that it won't be Retina quality. 4G support is also likely to be omitted.

Misek added that both handsets could be released in June or July, which suggests to us that Apple is reserving the autumn period to unveil the so-called iPhone Math (or iPhone+) that’s been spat out by the rumour-mill recently.

Word is that this will be a bigger device, rocking a 4.8-inch display to compete with the influx of large-screen handsets from rivals that have hugely grown in popularity, particularly Samsung’s Galaxy Note range.
