Pricing for the forthcoming low-cost iPhone will be in line with mid-range smartphones, one of the best-connected tech-industry analysts forecasts, ahead of its anticipated release early next month.

In a note to investors, KGI’s Mingchi Kuo hangs his hat on a price point of between $400-500 for the handset informally dubbed the iPhone 5C when bought outright and sans contract.

That ought to equate to a UK price of between £250 and £320, before Apple adds the inevitable, but increasingly irksome, levy for us in Blighty.

Kuo also throws his weight behind persistent chatter that the iPhone 5C will replace the iPhone 5.

Perhaps surprisingly given that it’s assumed Apple’s reason for ditching the iPhone 5 is to bring consistency to dock connectors across its phone range, he anticipates that the iPhone 4S will remain a part of the product line.

Kuo stated: “We’ve learned that the iPhone 5 line will be terminated from 4Q13, while the iPhone 4S line will carry on.

“In other words, the 5C model will be positioned as midrange. We forecast its retail price to be US$400-$500.”

He added: “We expect iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 will fall into the price ranges of US$600-$700, US$400-$500, US$300-$400 and US$200-$300, respectively, in the new product cycle.”

The iPhone 5C, which will be fashioned from plastic to keep production costs down, and the premium-priced iPhone 5S are both expected to show their faces at a press event on September 10th.
