Evidence is mounting that the next iPhone will be home to a larger screen, after yet another industry sage threw his weight behind long-standing talk of an iPhablet.

Last week, a report from Peter Misek, an analyst at sector-trend forecasters Jeffries & Co, cited supply-chain sources that the iPhone 6 will feature a 4.8-inch display. That’s 0.8 inches bigger than the current-generation model.

Today, Brian White of Cantor Fitzgerald has also predicted more expansive display dimensions will be a feature of the iPhone 6. But according to White, the handset will pack a slightly larger five-inch screen that removes any doubt Apple is nudging its flagship smartphone into phablet territory.

White's research note to investors stated: “Our meeting with a tech supply chain vendor highlighted a bigger iPhone is in the works, and our contact expects a launch in the 2Q:14/3Q:14 time frame.

“Nearly a year ago, our research in Asia uncovered early stage work on a larger iPhone, and we indicated in our Apple initiation report dated 9/4/13 that ‘a larger screen size on the iPhone is possible in 2014 that could approach five inches.

“Given today’s meeting, we are confident that a larger iPhone (approximately five inches) will become a reality in 2014.”

Rumours that Apple, which was positively hostile to phablets under the aegis of former-CEO Steve Jobs, is testing larger iPhones have been circulating for months now.

Job claimed that capacious screens meant an unacceptable compromise on user experience, not least because they make one-hand use more difficult for owners.
